| The 2005 NCWNP district
dinner was held at the upscale Blackhawk Auto Museum at Danville, CA on
Saturday, April 2, 2005. This year the district honored it's local
chapters' "Unsung Heroes" through presenting the Legacy Awards
and Hikari Awards to nominated members of NCWNP district JACL
chapters. Ice skating Olympic Gold Medalist Kristi Yamaguchi was
the honorary chair and mistress of ceremonies.
Florin JACL's Annie Noguchi received the
Hikari Award, along with many other youth from chapters through out the
NCWNP district. The Hikari Award recognized youth leadership and
involvement in the local JACL chapters.
Florin JACL's Marion Kanemoto received
the Legacy Award, along with 20 other honorees from JACL chapters
through out the NCWNP district. The Legacy Award was presented to
one board nominated member of each JACL chapter in recognition and
celebration of their outstanding contributions to their local chapters
through out many years of selfless service.
Marion Kanemoto has been an active member of the Florin JACL and the
Florin
community since 1985. She
has selflessly donated her time and talents to many projects and
services over the years such as: the Florin JACL Oral History Project; the
class action lawsuit against the government "Marion Kanemoto
vs.Janet Reno;” Satsuki
Ina's documentary "CHILDREN OF THE CAMPS;” the Japanese American
Archival Collection at CSUS; and the Time of Remembrance program at the
California State History Museum. Her
many contributions and accomplishments have made her a well respected
and invaluable member of the Florin chapter of the JACL and the greater
Florin
community.
Marion
Kanemoto's Community Involvement & Leadership Experience:
- Chaired (and participated as an
interviewer) the Florin JACL Oral History Project, 1988 -
2003, which interviewed over 100 individuals and published 77 hard
bound books containing 95 oral histories. The books were made
available to CSUS and UCD and several other institutions as well as
individuals.
- She was a participant in the class
action lawsuit against the government; "Marion Kanemoto
vs.Janet Reno", prepared by the S.F. law firm of Morrison and
Foerster (pro-bono), which sought redress for the nisei minors who
had to accompany their parents who had chosen to repatriate to Japan
during World War II in conjunction with the POW exchange.
(This suit was settled without trial in favor of the plaintiffs.)
- Participant in Satsuki Ina's
documentary, "CHILDREN OF THE CAMPS". 1996.
- Participant as interviewee in the RMS
Communications Inc.'s documentary, " BY DAWN'S EARLY
LIGHT" (
Pearl Harbor
; Stories of Recovery), 1999.
- Participant as interviewee in the
SEATTLE DENSHO PROJECT, 2003.
- Participant in the charter group which
created and maintains the Japanese American Archival
- Collection at CSUS. 1994 to present.
- Participant and docent in the Time of
Remembrance program at the
California
State
History
Museum
. The program educated over 6,000 students from northern
California
in 2004, and the numbers are growing each year. Program covers
the internment, nisei veterans, civil rights and the constitution.
