2012-08-17 - Fundraising Appeal for the Wisconsin Sikh Temple Shooting Victims
Dear Friends of the Florin J.A.C.L.,
Birmingham, Alabama 1963: Hate mongers bomb a Baptist Church, murdering four innocent Black children during the struggle for civil rights in the South. Oak Creek, Wisconsin August 5, 2012, almost 50 years later: A hate monger shoots up a Sikh Temple service, murdering six innocent people and wounding four others in backlash from 9/11. Joplin, Missouri August 6, 2012 the next day: Suspected hate arsonists burn down a Muslim mosque in the middle of the night. The challenge to decent Americans continue.
Shocked and outraged by the recent August 5th attack in Wisconsin, our hearts go out to the victims, including the brave officer who came to their aid. To help them, the Florin JACL is partnering with the Sacramento Sikh Temple which has established a special fund for the Oak Creek Wisconsin Sikh Temple. The donations will go towards support of the victims and their families. Can you help?
For those wishing to donate, please make your tax-deductible checks payable to “Sacramento Sikh Temple” and include “Oak Creek Victims” in the memo line. Please mail to: Florin JACL c/o 15 Mark River Court, Sacramento, CA 95831-3362 with Attention: Oak Creek Victims. If you have one, please also include an email address. The Florin JACL will do the administrative work including outreach, acknowledgement, and check delivery to the Sacramento Sikh Temple. Please share this appeal with your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers.
Since March 4, 2011, the Sacramento Sikh community has reeled from the unsolved hate murders of two elderly Sikh men walking in Elk Grove. Yet, the Sacramento Sikh Temple has still stepped up to donate $11,000 to other victims in Oak Creek. The Sikh Temple is known for its generosity in feeding the poor and hungry, sharing with visitors to its temple, and strongly supporting the recent Japan Relief Effort.
The Sacramento Sikh Temple in West Sacramento is the largest of 7 Sikh temples in the Sacramento area. It is a leader in interfaith outreach and has worked to promote community understanding through work with many groups including the Florin JACL in the 11 years since the 9/11 attacks. The Sacramento Sikh Temple is a non-profit religious / charitable organization with tax exempt status.
Over the past two weeks, it has rallied to organize an Interfaith Prayer (August 8), Candlelight Vigil at the State Capitol attended by over 1,000 people (August 10), and a Sikh Prayer Service (August 12) where they recognized supportive local leaders Senator Darrell Steinberg and Assembly Member Mariko Yamada.
Outreach organized by the Florin JACL brought over 25 JACL members and friends to the events. Northern California JACL District representative, Andy Noguchi, made a solidarity speech to the vigil on behalf of the Japanese American community.
We are also sharing with you two outstanding pieces about Muslim, Sikh, and Hindu youth coming together in a spoken word tribute to the victims of Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Attached below are internet links to an article by Sacramento Bee Reporter Stephen Magagnini about local college student Zaki Syed and a YouTube Video posted by this group of dynamic artists.
